How to Move a Piano Safely: A Step-by-Step Guide

Why Pianos Are Different

A piano is one of the most challenging items to move safely. They’re extraordinarily heavy (an upright piano can weigh 200–300kg; a grand piano 250–500kg), oddly shaped, fragile inside, and enormously valuable — both financially and sentimentally. Moving a piano incorrectly can damage the instrument, injure the movers, and damage floors, walls, and doorframes in the process.

Types of Pianos and Their Challenges

Upright pianos are the most common and the most straightforward to move — but still require proper equipment and at least 2–3 experienced people. The main challenge is navigating doorways, stairs, and tight corners.

Grand pianos require partial disassembly — the legs are removed and the body is laid on its side on a piano board — before transport. This needs specialist knowledge and the right equipment. Never attempt to move a grand piano without professional help.

The Equipment Required

  • Heavy-duty piano dolly or skid board
  • Moving straps and harnesses
  • Furniture blankets for wrapping
  • Ratchet straps for securing in the truck
  • Stair ramps if stairs are involved
  • Floor protection

The Process: Upright Piano

  1. Close and lock the keyboard lid
  2. Wrap the piano thoroughly in moving blankets, secured with tape (not touching the piano surface)
  3. Tilt the piano slightly and slide a piano dolly underneath
  4. Use straps to secure the piano to the dolly
  5. Navigate slowly and carefully — one person guiding from the front, one or two pushing from behind
  6. Use ramps for any steps — never attempt to carry a piano up or down stairs without proper equipment
  7. Load into the truck and secure firmly — a piano should never move in transit

Why DIY Piano Moving Is Risky

Every year, people are seriously injured attempting to move pianos without proper training or equipment. The combination of extreme weight, awkward shape, and the need to navigate tight spaces makes piano moving genuinely dangerous for inexperienced movers. Beyond the risk of injury, an incorrectly moved piano can be structurally damaged in ways that are very expensive to repair.

What to Tell Your Removalists

When booking, always mention the piano upfront and provide details: upright or grand, approximate age, the access at both ends (stairs, narrow doorways, lifts), and whether it needs to be tuned after moving (pianos generally need tuning after any move due to changes in temperature and humidity).
