10 Things to Do Before the Removalists Arrive

Preparation is Everything

Moving day is stressful enough without scrambling to get things done at the last minute. The best way to ensure your removalists can work efficiently — and that your move runs smoothly — is to be thoroughly prepared before they arrive. Here are the 10 things our Gold Coast customers swear by.

1. Disassemble Large Furniture

Bed frames, dining tables, and large shelving units should be disassembled the night before. This saves significant time on the day and reduces the risk of damage getting bulky items through doorways. Keep all screws and fittings in labelled zip-lock bags taped to the furniture they belong to.

2. Pack Everything — Seriously, Everything

This sounds obvious, but it’s the number one cause of delays on moving day. When removalists arrive, every item that needs to move should be in a box or clearly labelled. Leave out only what you’ll need during the move itself (phone charger, keys, snacks, kids’ essentials).

3. Label Every Box Clearly

Write the destination room on the top and at least one side of every box. This lets removalists place boxes directly in the right room at your new home, saving you hours of shuffling things around later. Bonus tip: add a brief contents note like “Kitchen — fragile glassware” so you know where to unpack first.

4. Protect Your Floors

Lay down floor protection at both properties — especially on hardwood, tiles, or carpet near the entry and any heavily trafficked paths. Old cardboard, moving blankets, or purpose-built floor runners all work well. This is especially important in high-rise apartments where building management often requires it.

5. Clear a Path

Walk through your home and ensure there’s a clear, safe path from every room to the exit. Move any obstacles, secure loose rugs, and remove anything that could cause a trip hazard. A clear path means faster loading and safer work for the team.

6. Defrost the Fridge

Fridges and freezers need to be fully defrosted before moving — usually at least 24 hours in advance. A fridge that’s still cold or wet inside can’t be properly sealed for transport. Use this opportunity to clear out anything that won’t survive the move.

7. Reserve Parking

Make sure there’s adequate parking for the truck at both addresses. On the Gold Coast, this is especially important in beach suburbs like Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach, and Palm Beach where street parking is limited. If you’re in an apartment, check whether the building has a loading dock booking system.

8. Separate Items Not Going on the Truck

Put anything you’re taking yourself — valuables, medications, important documents, plants — in a clearly separate area (ideally your car) before the team arrives. This prevents anything being accidentally loaded that shouldn’t be.

9. Have Payment Ready

Confirm your payment method before moving day so there are no delays or awkward conversations at the end of a long day. Most Gold Coast removalists accept bank transfer, cash, or card — check with your provider in advance.

10. Do a Final Walkthrough

Before the truck leaves, do a complete walkthrough of your old home — every room, every cupboard, the garage, under beds, and in the roof space. It’s very easy to leave things behind in the rush of moving day, and going back later is always more difficult than you’d expect.
